## Paste a YouTube link

Tagging a video before you upload it? Sign in, transcribe the file on [video to text](https://clipscript.app/video-to-text) and pick YouTube tags under the transcript.

Paste a public video link; the audio is fetched and written down as text with timestamps, exported as TXT, SRT or VTT.

## How does this YouTube tag generator work?

Paste the link above; the transcript loads free from the video's captions. Press Write with YouTube tags selected, and a language model lists the phrases a viewer would type to find this video: the exact topic first, then the names it mentions, then the wider subject. Code then cuts the list to YouTube's 500-character limit, counting the quotes around tags with spaces, and returns one line to paste into YouTube Studio plus three hashtags. 1 credit.

- **Written from:** The video's own words
- **Limit kept:** 500 characters in all
- **Also:** 3 hashtags for the description
- **Price:** 1 credit; transcript free

## What tags still do on YouTube

- **Less than titles** YouTube's own help page says tags "play a minimal role in helping viewers find your video". The title, the thumbnail and the description matter more; tags are the last field to fill.
- **Misspellings and names** Where tags help is a word people spell several ways, a product name, or a place. Those come straight from the transcript, so they are in the list when the video says them.
- **Hashtags are separate** Hashtags go in the title or the description and are shown to viewers; tags are hidden. The three hashtags here are for the description.
- **Too many tags** YouTube's policies count excessive tags in a description as spam. The tags here go into the tag box only, and the list is short on purpose.

## Using the tags

1. **Write them from the transcript** Load the transcript, keep YouTube tags selected and press Write. The first line shows how many of the 500 characters the list uses.
2. **Delete what does not fit** Remove any tag about something the video only mentions in passing. Fewer, closer tags are better than a full box.
3. **Paste into YouTube Studio** In the video's details, open Show more and paste the line into Tags; YouTube splits it at the commas. Put the hashtags at the end of the description.

## Tag generator questions

### Is the YouTube tag generator free?

The transcript is free for any video with captions. The tags are 1 credit, plus one credit per 20,000 characters of transcript past the first 20,000, so a very long video costs a little more. 1,500 credits are $15.

### Why from the transcript, not the title?

A title is a few words; the transcript is everything the video says. Tags written from it name the things that are really in the video, which is what makes a tag worth having.

### Can I see the tags on another creator's video?

No, and this does not try to: YouTube does not show a video's tags on its page. What it can do is suggest tags for any public video from what is said in it.

### My video has no captions yet.

Then the speech is transcribed by a speech model first, 3 credits a minute up to 10 minutes after three free runs a day, and the tags are written from that.

### What else can it write from the same transcript?

[Chapters](https://clipscript.app/youtube-chapters-generator) with timestamps, a [summary](https://clipscript.app/youtube-video-summarizer), a [blog post](https://clipscript.app/youtube-to-blog-post), clip moments, an X thread or a newsletter, each priced on its button.
